Nutrition
Nutrition has long been a cornerstone of PRASAD Chikitsa’s commitment to improving children’s health in the Tansa Valley. What began in 1984 as the Milk Program, delivering vitamin-enriched milk to undernourished children, has evolved into a comprehensive Nutrition Program. Today, it serves over 1,000 nutritious meals and supplements each day to children under six and to pregnant and nursing mothers at 40 aanganwadis (preschools) across the region.

Children under 6, pregnant and nursing mothers
India faces a severe child malnutrition crisis. According to UNICEF, one-third of the world’s malnourished children live in India, with over 60 million preschool-aged children suffering from developmental deficiencies caused by poor nutrition. Malnutrition weakens the immune system, delays physical and cognitive development, and contributes to nearly 50% of all childhood deaths. In the Tansa Valley, poverty and limited access to diverse, nutritious food place young children and expectant mothers at particularly high risk.
How We Are Solving It
-

Milk and Nutrition Program
Launched in 1984 and expanded in 2014, the program provides fresh milk, nourishing snacks, and supplements six days a week to children under six, ensuring consistent nutrition during a child’s most formative years.
-

Nutrition Support for Mothers
Pregnant and nursing mothers are included in the program to ensure better health for both mother and child. Enhanced immunity and improved nutrition during pregnancy help reduce risks of birth complications and promote healthy child development.
-

Growth Monitoring
Children enrolled in the program are regularly monitored using anthropometric assessments (weight, height, BMI) to track progress and tailor interventions as needed. This ensures that each child’s nutritional development is carefully managed.
-

Home Kitchen Gardens
To sustain long-term optimal nutrition, PRASAD Chikitsa helps families of malnourished children establish home kitchen gardens. The initiative enables regular access to fresh vegetables and strengthens household food security.
Impact
The Nutrition Program has significantly improved the health and immunity of children and mothers in the Tansa Valley. As a result of regular meals, education, and monitoring, malnutrition rates have decreased and children are growing stronger and healthier. The program also promotes sustainable, community-driven solutions like home gardens helping ensure continued access to nutritious food.
