Wastewater Management
In many rural villages of the Tansa Valley, open drains and stagnant wastewater have long been a source of illness, pollution, and poor sanitation. In 2017, PRASAD Chikitsa launched its Wastewater Management Program to improve community hygiene by promoting simple, cost-effective drainage solutions—most notably, soakpits, which manage wastewater, reduce health risks and protect the environment.
Program launched:
2017
Diseases targeted
Diarrhea, cholera, typhoid
Environmental benefit
Groundwater recharge
How We Are Solving It
-

Soakpit Construction
Implementing soakpits—affordable, decentralized systems that direct household wastewater into the ground, naturally filtering it through layers of soil
-

Health and Hygiene Awareness
Educating families on the link between wastewater, hygiene, and disease prevention. Collaborating with local villagers to construct, monitor, and maintain soakpits for long-term sustainability
-

Environmental Benefits
Reducing mosquito breeding by preventing stagnant water from surface runoff and replenishing groundwater naturally through percolation
Impact
Substantial reduction in waterborne illnesses across program villages
Improved sanitation and environmental health
Increased community participation in hygiene and waste management
Groundwater replenishment through eco-friendly waste disposal
